Patkai, April 24 (MExN): A talk on ‘Research Fundamentals: Developing skills from analytical reading to fieldwork’ was organised by the Department of English, Patkai Christian College (PCC) (Autonomous) at the Bundrock Chapel, Auditorium on April 24.
Dr Moalemba Jamir, Associate Editor, The Morung Express, began his speech by defining the word “Research,” highlighting the importance of the key terms objective and subjective approach while explaining the difference between everyday research and scholarly research.
He emphasised that “it is important that you choose a topic that genuinely interests you” as “it leads to meaningful exploration.”
Discussing analytical reading, Dr Moa encouraged students “to adopt a questioning mindset,” urging them to “look beneath the surface” and “try to understand what the writer is trying to say.”
He addressed ethical considerations in research, including the need to protect privacy, respect participant dignity and rights, and be mindful of plagiarism and intellectual property rights (IPR) issues.
Dr Moa provided insights on emerging research trends, particularly suggesting the use of Open Source tools and Artificial Intelligence.
Responding to a question during the interactive session, Dr Moa remarked that the advent of AI has not only affected the academic sphere but is also significantly impacting the news media sector. News media organisations are embracing AI with cautious optimism, he added.
Alluding to the arrival of the typewriter, and later the computer, significantly contributed to the fields of academics, writing and journalism, he advised using AI just as ‘another tool.’
“AI is another set of tools in the ever-changing landscape,” he observed, stressing that “originality must remain, and human intervention must always be there.”
