•-The celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8th every year is a telling fact of how women over the decades have evolved and conquered vices against them. Women all over the world have played revolutionary roles in the economic, political, social and family spheres in their struggle for respect and dignity as a human being. The first female Indian President, Pratibha Patel, the Supreme Commander of the Defence Forces of India, manifests how much we have grown and matured as a democratic country and is a reflection of how our constitution treats women at par with men without any discrimination. Sadly, however, women have many more fights to contest and many more battles to overcome to enjoy rights and privileges at equal footing with men.
One cannot deny the influence of a woman in one’s life; be it in the form of a mother, a sister, a wife, an aunt, a teacher or a friend. This day, I am reminded of the roles certain women have played in my life, particularly my beloved mother. My mother has loved and nurtured me right from the day I was born. She instilled in me qualities and values which have helped built my character. I remember how she would read me the Bible every night and teach me passages from it. She is always there with a smile and a kind word of encouragement whenever I am down. One warm hug from her and I feel I can conquer anything. There were times I would take her love for granted but now as a adult, I realise with appreciation that I am what I am today because of my mother. It is because of her that I have had a very content and happy childhood.
As a token of my gratitude and respect to my mother and all the women around the world I would like to wish them a very “Happy International Women’s Day.” I would like to take this opportunity to especially wish my respected Vice-Principal and all my respected female friends at Patkai Christian College. May God bless them all.
