Training on ‘large cardamom cultivation’ conducted

Wokha, January 13 (MExN): ATMA Ralan block Wokha conducted training and demonstration programme at New Ralan village on January 6.


The training was given on the topic ‘Large cardamom cultivation for enhancing farmers’ income.’ Since large cardamom is a new crop being cultivated in New Ralan area, resource person Dr Aabon Yanthan, Scientist ICAR Jarnapani, highlighted the benefits and high output value in cardamom cultivation. He further elaborated the requisite conditions for its cultivation viz. Climate and soil requirement, propagation methods, nursery management, planting land preparation, spacing, manuring, weeding, soil conservation, irrigation. He also addressed some issues in pest & diseases and management of viral diseases as well.  The farmers were further taught the indication of the time of harvest & harvesting techniques as well as the method of curing. He also emphasized on proper packaging in order to avoid fungus growth and prevent damage to the stored produce.


In the second session, two demonstrations were carried out on ‘Plant protection measures in citrus’ and ‘Value addition of Citrus.’


Resource person performed step by step the preparation of Bordeaux mixture as well asBordeaux paste and showed them its application in citrus trees.


Since citrus is a widely grown fruit in upper Ralan area, the need to teach them on its value addition is very essential. Hence farmers were shown the methods of citrus juice extraction and its preservation, where they can earn additional income during the off season as well.


The programme concluded with distribution of inputs, copper sulphate, agri lime and Sodium benzoate to the farmers. Altogether 35 farmers and ATMA officials attended the programme.
