Tuli, September 11 (MExN): A training programme on “Modern Technologies of Horticulture” was organised at Tuli town on September 9 by Basix Krishi Samruddhi Limited (BKSL).
According to the BKSL, the initiative aims to strengthen farmers’ skills by promoting Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), sustainable farming methods, value addition at the local level, and exploring alternative markets for better price realisation.
Around 97 farmers from Tuli town and neighbouring villages participated in the training, which was organised with support from the Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH), Medziphema, under the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
At the event, resource person Sam Taro from the Spices Board of India, Dimapur branch, highlighted the benefits of government schemes for farmers, techniques in horticulture farming, and GAP for improved productivity and market potential.
He also emphasised the importance of organic farming, encouraging farmers to reduce the use of pesticides and chemicals, and to preserve the originality of locally grown crops.
Collective action among farmer interest groups was also stressed as a way to strengthen the farming community, informed a BKSL release.
The training included interactive sessions moderated by Aakam Pame, Project Coordinator of BKSL, described as a national-level organisation working for agri-based livelihood promotion.
During the session, participants raised challenges faced in cultivation. Farmers, especially women, expressed enthusiasm in adopting new techniques for productivity and sustainability, and many also committed to reducing dependence on chemical inputs in favour of natural and organic practices, it added.
