Tribute to former comrade Jackson Kuki

(Killed In Action On 6th February 2012 At Athibung)

Our dear hero, brother and son. Too agonised are our hearts, souls torn apart, speechless and strength sapped, feelings numbed and too shaken that tears won’t flow. All through the wild, hostile jungles, terrains and dark, deep waters of Burma, you stood there besides me, guarded me days and nights against every foe, heavy laden and weary yet ever wary. You tended my sickened body.

You left us only to see off your brother’s demise. You said you were returning, me and sons were awaiting you, my sons call out your name even in their sleep, how dearly we miss you. You were more than a brother to us.

Alas! You stepped into the wrong camp at the moment; I knew you were forced by circumstance to take refuge in foe’s camp. To find your lead-riddled lifeless mortal among the slain foe grieves us no more. No less than the pain as burning lead pierces your flesh, the harsh barrage that snuffed shut your breath, our beings ceased to exist on hearing your sacrifice. Too early yet a glorious ending, a hero’s death, an envy of every warrior. Your absence in our lives conveys stronger your presence. My sons shall ever miss your sweet lullaby and your gentle hugs and smiles.

We salute your brave battle and courageous martyrdom for others’ sake. Adieu our hero and brother.

Isak Sumi and sons Chunyika and Nisaphe
