Much to the delight and contentment of classical music lovers in Nagaland, the first show of ‘Classical Gala 2022’ was hosted at Holy Cross Auditorium, Dimapur on October 14 last. An assemble of performers presented Franz Schubert’s ‘MASS in G’, works by Gustav Holst, Elaine Hagenberg, Jake Runestad, Karl Jenkins, Astor Piazzolla and more.

The gala conquered its attempt to harmonize major classical groups from Nagaland such as the Nagaland String Orchestra (NSO), Margaret Shishak School of Music Singers (MSSM) and The Nagaland Chamber Choir (TNCC).

Earlier, the organisers have informed that the ‘Classical Gala 2022’ has been conceptualised with the aspiration to demonstrate the joy of lifelong learning and to share a wider variety of Western Classical Music, enabling people to experience the power and beauty of large ensemble music and to encourage its growth in Nagaland.

The gala also aims to educate and create awareness about classical choral and orchestral music and to promote it to a higher level and broader audience.

‘Dimapur need a good performance hall’
Following the Friday night show, social media post floated with applause for the performances. “Music is one of the last saving graces of Nagaland… They will be performing at the impressive Capital Cultural Hall in Kohima on 16th October. Don't miss it,” one audience posted in facebook. “The only downside of the event (no fault of the great performers or the generous hosts) was the venue. All those in favor of the proposition that Dimapur needs a good cultural hall raise your hand and say, "AYE"” he wrote.

“Yes, we desperately need a good performance hall in Dimapur. It’s so frustrating for us classical musicians, as we never get the right sound. We are so distracted by the feedbacks and poor sound that it affects our performances,” Joey Woch (Principal Violinist) responded.

“As a classical musician, our performance depends so much of the hall, as the hall becomes a part of our instrument and it's so disappointing not been able to get that here. I hope and pray that we will be able to witness and perform in a good acoustic hall before we die!” he cited.

‘Classical Gala 2022’ will be held at Capital Cultural Hall, Kohima from 6:00 pm onwards on October 16 (Sunday).
