UNC urges Nagas in Manipur to boycott ADC by-polls

Imphal | September 28 : The United Naga Council (UNC) has urged the Nagas in Manipur not to participate in the forthcoming by-elections to the Autonomous District Council (ADC) to be held in 10 ADC constituencies. The UNC said it will amount to the violation of the July 1, 2010 Naga Peoples' Convention (NPC) declaration.
Giving its background, the UNC said after series of consultative meetings in all the Naga areas of Manipur on the controversial Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council, 3rd Amendment Act, 2008, the United Naga Council (UNC) had submitted representations on the wishes of the people to  defer and review  the enactment of the Act as the Naga people cannot accept it in its present form and content since it was designed to suppress and deny the rights of the tribals. "When the government of Manipur went ahead with the rejected MDC election in 2010, the Naga people declared the MDC Election, null and void and have not allowed them to function in the Naga areas," said the UNC.
While the Nagas are demanding "Alternative Arrangement" from the government of India outside the government of Manipur, the latter has deliberately notified holding of by-election of rejected MDC election in Naga areas in the month of October, 2011, the UNC said while adding, "This is in total disregard of the sentiments of the Nagas and a direct challenge to the Nagas peoples’ decision."
The Naga tribe hohos, regional/district presidents and Naga frontal organizations have resolved on September 24 to recommit and uphold the 'declaration of the Naga Peoples’ Convention (NPC) held on July 1, 2010, ot said.  "It is therefore the bounden duty of all tribe hohos, district/regional organisations, Naga frontal organizations and all Nagas, young or old, rich or poor and of whatever position, party or position to ensure that the rejected MDC by-election stands rejected. All concerned are therefore informed that it will be a serious violation of the NPC declaration to participate in the MDC by-election," the UNC urged.
