A two-day psycho education for teachers and parents training programme got underway here at Tourist Lodge on Monday, with adjunct professor in Yonsei University, South Korea Professional Counselor, Esther Jang as training conductor and resource person.
The training organized by Joyous Life Professional Counselling Center (JLPCC), Dimapur, is with the objective to create awareness to parents and teachers about understanding psychology of children and adolescents.
The short term training course commenced with two sessions on the topics “Attachment theory and parenting training” and “Developmental theory and understanding psychology of children and adolescents”. Esther Jang focused on British psychologist John Bowlby, who was the first attachment theorist, describing attachment as a “lasting psychologist connectedness between human beings”. She stressed on understanding attachments, stages of attachments, factors that influence attachments, patterns of attachments, attachment theory, Dr. Sears 7 B’s of attachments etc.
In the second session, Esther Jang highlighted on Parent Effectiveness Training (PET), its 15 principles, parental role, psychodynamic theory, behaviourism theory, social and cognitive theory etc.
JLPCC director, Vivi Zhimomi, in her introductory speech shared her experience as a counselor dealing with clients of various age group which has made her realise that right parenting and safe environment at home and in school play a key role in the mental development and overall growth of every child and adult.
According to Vivi, the root cause of all major mental issues especially with the youths and adults starts at home and also in schools. She said since the duty of the parents and teachers is to shape the future generation, it is important for responsible adults to guide their children in the right direction through proper channel.
Trainees of the programme included parents, teachers and church members.
The training will culminate on January 21, and Jang will focus on the topics “Children and adolescents’ abnormal psychology” and “Psychological assessment for children and adolescents”.
