Director General of Assam Rifles (DGAR), Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera AVSM, SM on Tuesday maintained that while the Assam Rifles comprises personnel from different parts of the country, the uniform binds them together as “one tribe.”
Addressing ex-servicemen and their dependents during the Assam Rifles Outreach Drive held at Hentry Hall, Mokokchung, on June 23, Lt Gen Lakhera said that, much like the diverse tribes of Nagaland and Assam, the force draws its members from varied backgrounds.
However, he noted that their shared service and uniform unite them as one fraternity.
Describing the gathering as an occasion to express solidarity with senior members of the Assam Rifles family, the DGAR assured support to ex-servicemen and their dependents. He said their grievances would be addressed and encouraged them to come forward with their concerns.
He also highlighted various government provisions and welfare facilities available to ex-servicemen and urged them to avail the benefits.
Lt Gen Lakhera further informed the gathering that children of Assam Rifles personnel aspiring to join the force could explore opportunities available under existing provisions, including compassionate grounds, subject to eligibility.
The outreach programme was attended by around 300 ex-servicemen and their dependents from Mokokchung, Wokha, Kohima, Noklak, Tuensang, Dimapur and Longleng districts.
The event was also attended by IGAR (North), Commander 6 Sector Assam Rifles, Commander 7 Sector Assam Rifles and civil dignitaries from Mokokchung district.
As part of the programme, free medical and dental consultations were provided and medicines distributed. Veer Naris, Veer Matas and gallantry awardees were felicitated in recognition of their service and sacrifice.
Mobility and assistive aids were also distributed among ex-servicemen and their dependents, including 11 wheelchairs, six walkers, 15 walking sticks and six hearing aids.
The programme featured cultural performances, including Ao and Chang traditional dances. Earlier, the welcome address was delivered by Chuba Ao, President of the Assam Rifles Ex-Servicemen Association (ARESA), Mokokchung.
