USSC urges improvement of higher education

DIMAPUR, JANUARY 25 (MExN): The United Sangtam Students’ Conference (USSC) has urged the Nagaland Government to improve the quality of higher education in Kiphire district and called for introduction of science and commerce streams in schools of the district.

In a representation to the Principal Secretary, School Education, the USSC said that “Kiphire being the most backward region remains neglected in many spheres which needs to be addressed.” It particularly pointed to, “the untold miseries especially in the education sector.”

It observed that most of the government schools in other districts have arts, science and commerce streams while Kiphire which has been tagged as an ‘aspiration district’ lacks these facilities.

“This inadequate measure is being manifested in the recent high demand for the upgradation of science and commerce streams in Kiphire district,” it stated. The USSC informed that proposal for introduction of the two streams had been discussed and proved during a special cabinet meeting held in Kiphire on November 9, 2018.”

“But still we face the negation and procrastination from your respective end,” the USSC said. It meanwhile pointed out that despite the government not paying heed to the district’s plight, the students, teachers and parents have strived to give their best efforts. This, it said, resulted in a student from Loyola Higher Secondary School Kiphire securing the top 1 position in the 2020 HSSLC exams.

“Most of the talented students wish to pursue their further studies in the science and commerce streams at their native dwelling,” the USSC claimed. It however stated that due to the lack of facilities and financial constrains, many opt for the arts stream.

The USSC informed that there are 109 government schools in Kiphire district out of which 2 are higher secondary schools (Arts), 16 high schools and the rest are middle and primary schools. Meanwhile there are 17 private schools out of which 10 are high schools and 1 higher secondary school (Arts).

The USSC urged the School Education Department to look into this issue on a priority basis and immediately implement the proposal of upgradation of the education system in the district.

“We firmly believe that this is the only sector from which we can bring about progress and development in Kiphire and the State,” it added.
