Dimapur, November 1 (MExN): Vedanta Oil & Gas has reaffirmed its commitment to exploring the Northeast’s untapped hydrocarbon resources, highlighting the region’s potential to strengthen India’s energy security and attract long-term investments.

The company reiterated its commitment at the North East Energy Summit 2026 – Nagaland Energy Chapter, where its representatives participated in industry discussions on the region’s oil and gas prospects, including a panel on “Unlocking Nagaland’s Hydrocarbon Potential.”

Graham Richardson, Chief Development Officer; Balu Govind Meempat, Director – Northeast; and Avishkar Chauhan, Deputy Director – Northeast, highlighted opportunities in the region’s underexplored oil and gas basins. They also discussed the role of advanced technology, supportive policy frameworks and collaboration between governments and industry in accelerating exploration.

The company stated that Northeast India has a long history of oil and gas exploration, with some of Asia’s earliest oil discoveries recorded in the Digboi-Namdang region. Despite this legacy, considerable hydrocarbon resources remain untapped across the region.

Drawing on its exploration and development experience, including operations in Barmer, Rajasthan, Vedanta Oil & Gas is exploring opportunities across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. The company also cited its Rudra discovery as strengthening its confidence in the region’s hydrocarbon potential.

Its investment commitments in the Northeast were earlier outlined by Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal at Advantage Assam 2.0, where he announced investments in oil and gas exploration and production across the region. The commitment was further reinforced at the Rising Northeast Summit with additional investment announcements covering Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Tripura, Meghalaya and Mizoram.

According to the company, these investments align with the objectives of Hydrocarbon Vision 2030 for the Northeast, which seeks to accelerate exploration, strengthen energy infrastructure and harness the region’s natural resources. It also called for closer coordination among the Centre, state governments, industry and local stakeholders to translate the region’s hydrocarbon potential into sustainable energy production and economic growth.

Beyond exploration, Vedanta Oil & Gas stated that it continues to support community livelihoods in Assam through its corporate social responsibility initiatives, including skill development and digital education for youth. The company maintained that responsible resource development, investment and community engagement must progress together, adding that unlocking the Northeast’s hydrocarbon potential could generate employment, encourage industrial development and contribute to India's energy self-reliance.
