Vehicle registrations in Nagaland have been gradually picking up in 2021 after falling drastically in 2020 due to the onset of COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown and halt in economic activities.

In 2021, while the registration started on a positive note in the first quarter (January-March), the arrival of  the second wave of the pandemic  saw sharp fall in the registrations thereafter.

Accordingly, while January to April saw registration averaging 2252 per month, it fell to 407 in May and 355 in June, informed data available on the VAHAN Dashboard.

VAHAN Dashboard is an online data repository of all vehicles registration and other related issues in the country developed the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and maintained by the Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH).

However, registrations gradually recovered in the third quarter (July-September) with 2429 registrations in July and the momentum continued thereafter.

Till October 31, 2021, a total of 18,462 vehicles were registered in Nagaland as compared to 12809 during the corresponding period last year.

It reflected a 44.13% jump in registrations of vehicles in 2021 over 2020 during the January–October period.
However, it is yet to reach the 2019 pre-COVID level, when total number of registrations till October stood at  25,586. (See Table)

It must be noted here that vehicle registration in Nagaland has been gradually improving since August 2020 but the onset of second wave resulted in drastic fall in the second quarter of 2021.

Apart from the pandemic, data on the VAHAN Dashboard indicated that vehicle registration in Nagaland, in tune with national trend, saw a fall from 2019, when the number fell to 29164 from 33,944 in 2018, indicating a 14.08% decline.

While the fall in registration then came on the back of slower economic growth in 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic further served as a double blow, and the number fell by 44.50% to 16,186 in 2020.

No sparks for electric vehicles, LMVs lead registration

Out of 18,691, a total of 8,308 were diesel-based engines and 10280 were petrol-based.

The dashboard further highlighted that electric vehicles are yet to catch on in Nagaland with just 2 registration of Electric BOV (Battery Operated Vehicles) so far.  In 2020, only 12 such vehicles were registered while in 2019, it was 29.

Category-wise, most registrations were Light Motor Vehicle (6,480), followed by Heavy Goods Vehicle (5,311) and Two Wheeler (Non-Transport) 4,867.
