Vehicle torched in Tizit, prohibitory orders invoked

Prohibitory orders restricting assembly of people from dusk to dawn, under section 144 CrPC, was invoked in Tizit town on February 21, evening. The restriction was enforced by the Deputy Commissioner, Mon, following an incident of arson in the town on the night of February 20. 

It said that the order was necessitated based on information “from Tizit sub-division that certain group of people are not only disturbing the law-and-order situation in and around Tizit Town area but also hampering the ongoing process of General Election in free and fair manner, thereby causing likelihood of breach of public peace and tranquility in around Tizit Town area.” 

The order took effect from 7pm, Tuesday, and will “remain in force till further orders.” However, from February 22, the restriction will take effect from 5pm till 5am. During this period, gathering of more than four persons at a time in public or private places; movement of any person or group and motor vehicle and all vehicular movement of non-essential nature will be restricted. It covers all 9 wards of Tizit town, in addition to the Tizit-Namtola bridge-Holy Trinity school.  

District administration, police, para military forces, magistrate on duty, doctors and medical staff and persons engaged in election duty or on medical emergencies, along with movement of essential commodities, commercial vehicles (passenger), press and media, telecom services will be exempted. 

Meanwhile, the Mon police informed that the incident was reported around 11:30 pm. As per the police, a group of around 10-15 unidentified “masked” individuals intruded into the Forest colony residence of the Naga People’s Front(NPF) candidate from the 41 Tizit Assembly seat. They reportedly intimidated the people, who were found in the house claiming that they were from an opposing camp but did not mention any party in particular.  

They reportedly then took one vehicle, which was at the house, along with two unnamed persons, who were there. The vehicle was later torched not far from the house, while one of the two persons was let go and the other was reported missing. The missing person was found unharmed by the police at around 4pm, Tuesday, in the local bazaar. The Mon police added that it received a complaint from the NPF party about the incident.
