Imphal | July 25 : In a shocking incident close to midnight on Sunday, a village chairman and his wife were shot dead in cold blood in Ukhrul district by unidentified gunmen, said the police. According to the police, at about 11:30 pm on Sunday, around seven unidentified gunmen shot dead a village chairman of Lungphu in Phungyar sub-division of Ukhrul district, Varengam (35), and his 33-year old wife Ngaherla in cold blood before the entire family members. The police suspected the cause of the killing to be related to Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) but did not rule out other causes. No organization has owned responsibility of the killing as yet.
