Wokha DC orders regulated parking system, sets January 31 deadline

WOKHA, DECEMBER 19 (MExN): The Wokha district administration has directed private and commercial vehicle owners using public spaces for parking to make alternative parking arrangements within 45 days, citing growing congestion, safety concerns and inadequate urban infrastructure.

In an order, Deputy Commissioner Vineet Kumar said the rapid increase in vehicles in recent years has placed severe pressure on limited town space, with indiscriminate parking leading to traffic congestion, restricted pedestrian movement and obstruction of emergency access.

The order noted that several commercial structures have come up without adequate parking provisions for customers and staff, while public spaces are increasingly being encroached upon by parked vehicles.

Stating that narrow and congested roads blocked by parked vehicles hinder the movement of fire services, ambulances and other emergency responders, the administration said the situation poses serious risks to public safety and disaster preparedness.

As per the directions, vehicle owners using public space for parking must arrange their own parking facilities by January 31, 2026. Prospective vehicle buyers have also been advised to factor in parking availability before purchasing vehicles.

The order further directed shopping complexes, commercial establishments and all new constructions to provide adequate parking facilities within their premises. The Town Council has been asked to review and streamline approval processes for new commercial structures under the Municipal Act to ensure compliance.

With effect from the expiry of the 45-day period, parking will not be permitted along the National Highway passing through the town area. A task force comprising members from the district administration, police, traffic police, Town Council and Transport Office will be constituted to enforce the order.

The Town Council, in coordination with the traffic police, has also been directed to review parking arrangements on other town roads and take steps for regulation and identification of suitable parking spaces to ensure uninterrupted movement of emergency vehicles.

The order stated that the measures have been taken in the interest of public safety, disaster readiness and orderly urban development, and called upon all concerned to comply in letter and spirit.
