DIMAPUR, AUGUST 21 (MExN): The Lotha Students’ Union (LSU) and Lotha Youth Hoho (LYH) have served an ultimatum to all “erring telecom service providers of Wokha district.”

The LSU and LYH served a 10 day ultimatum (till August 31) to all the telecom service providers to immediately restore uninterrupted network services in Wokha town. They cautioned that failure to do so would compel the student community and consumers to “take our own course of action by shutting down all the network towers in Wokha district.”

A joint statement from the two organizations said that telecom services have been interrupted in Wokha district ever since the lockdown was declared in Nagaland state. It said that the LSU and LYH have been appealing to the telecom companies to address the issue as students are being adversely affected. It further stated that majority of the consumers are prepaid users who do not “get the normal services as per the tariff charges that is being paid to different telecom services.”

It further slammed service providers for excessive registration of customers “just for the margin profit,” while not being concerned about quality network service.

“We are apprehensive that some of the telecom companies are registering customers beyond the capacity of every tower that is being installed for operation. If they are to register more customers then network towers should be set up accordingly,” the organizations stated.

“We have provided enough time to the service providers but they seem to remain deaf to the hue and cry of the customers. Though some of the telecom service providers are trying to remedy the issue of uninterrupted services to the consumers, but unfortunately, things have not improved. The general public has been patient enough and therefore we shall not pay for the pathetic services that are provided to us anymore and have unanimously decided to completely shut down the network towers after our ultimatum expires if they choose to remain a mute spectator to our genuine demands,” the organizations stated.

Appeal to public
Meanwhile, the joint statement also appealed to the public of Wokha district and inter-district travelers to follow the updated Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) guidelines laid down by the State Government and to cooperate with the two organizations.

It informed that the two organizations will be strictly monitoring inter district travelers and advised travelers to cooperate with them to help prevent community transmission in Wokha district.

They further stated that the two orgainsations will strictly and regularly monitor the wearing of masks in public places, maintaining social distancing and plying of odd/oven vehicles in the district.
