Wokha Town bans single-use plastics with immediate effect

Wokha, May 20 (MExN): In pursuance of the Urban Development department notification, on the policy for restriction of use of plastics in Nagaland, the Wokha Town Council bans all single plastic bags of less than 50 microns and all Single Plastics, Styrfoam or thermocol cutlery, cups plates etc with immediate effect.

Further, packaging drinking water bottles of 200ml and 100ml shall in order to provide time for business establishments to dispose of existing stocks. Therefore, no business may henceforth buy, stock or distribute such items, the penalty for violating the above order shall be Rs.2000 for the first offence and Rs,5000 for subsequent offence. This was stated in a DIPR report. 

Consultative meeting called by ADC & Administrator Wokha Town Council of all colony/ward chairmen, GBs, Church Leaders, NGOs, Team Meta Metamorphosis, SHG and other stakeholders attended the meeting.

During meeting was ADC & Administrator WTC while apprising the members about the banning of plastic bags informed as per the Government notification the policy for restricting the use of Single Use Plastic in Nagaland is imposed. ADC also states that after the enforcement surprise checking and raids will be conducted in the entire business establishment to ensure strict enforcement of the banned where defaulters will be penalized.

SDC (C) Chonpenthugn Ezung urged all members present to sensitize their respective colony members, he furthest stated in collaboration with various SHG and Team Metamorphosis resources persons from Phek districted came and trained the entrepreneurs about paper bags making. At present 10 SGH from Wokha village and Team Metamorphosis were thoroughly trained and are ready to impart trainings for the interested local NGOs and entrepreneurs in the town. The teams are not nor producing huge quantity of products after the training programme, which is a great sigh of achievement. He also informed that Lotha Ekoe Hoho has been given the task to initiating making cloth carry bags as alternative use for plastic bags.
