Mon, October 21 (DIPR): One-day legal awareness programme for the women of Mon district was held under the theme: “Know your Rights”, at the Council Hall, Mon on October 20. The programme was organized by the Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) in collaboration with the National Commission for Women, New Delhi.
Emphasizing on the awareness of the legal rights of women, Chairperson NSCW, Sano Vamuzo said, not only women, but men too need to know their rights as citizens of a democratic country, because India is a democratic nation. She called upon the women folks to live and act like a true Christian women, removing all fears and doubts to catch up with the rest of the advanced world. She also exhorted the leaders of the various organizations to carry out their duties and responsibilities faithfully, so that others do not suffer for the wrong doing during their tenure as leaders of responsible organizations. She also informed that the NSCW is a full-fledged Commission dedicated to ensure equality and promoting women’s rights. The Commission for Women is a United Nation’s directed organization and the UN now maintains women’s rights as human rights. Therefore, denial of women’s rights can be called a serious violence against women and it directly indicates that women are not equal with men, she added. Emphasizing on Right to shelter; Right to food; Right to health; Right to education; Right to water & sanitation; Right to electricity; etc, she urged upon to know the rights of the citizens, because ignorance is the main obstacle to implement the rights and duties granted by the Indian Constitution.
DC Mon, Angau I. Thou while appreciating the performance of the NSCW under the able leadership of Sano Vamuzo, said that there is a radical change in the Naga societies since the inception of NSCW. Highlighting the policies and programmes of the Government for empowerment of women, she said according to Holy Bible, women are created to be the partners of men. Therefore, it is the responsibilities of the men folks not to deprive the rights and duties of women, but rather respect the rights of women and work hand in hand with women. She also urged upon the women folks not to neglect their rights and responsibilities and invite discrimination by depending on men folks.
Lamenting that Mon district has the lowest women literacy rate with 52.39%, she encouraged the Village Councils, GBs and VECs to compulsorily send their children to schools irrespective of gender issues. She also informed that as per the VDB norms, 25% of the VDB funds belong to women and the women folks have every right to claim for their rights for utilization of their share for upliftment of women at the grass root levels.
Member of NSCW, Ellen Konyak said that NSCW have been visiting Hospitals, educational Institutions, inspecting conditions of roads, etc and are reporting to the Government for necessary action. She also said that Church and the NGOs needs to play vital roles to deliver justice, love and peace to the people. The Resource person, NI Sangtam, Superintendent of Police Mon spoke on the Topic “Role of Police in safeguarding Women’s Rights”.
