Mokokchung, November 3 (MExN): The Forest Department, Mokokchung Division, in collaboration with the Wildlife Division, Dimapur, organised a two-day training/workshop on Human-Elephant Conflict Mitigation under the Community Conservation Area (CCA) management plan.
In a press release issued by the department, it stated that the programme was held on October 30 and October 31 respectively, covering the villages of Khar, Mongchen, Dibuia, Alongkima and Waromung where members of the Village Councils and CCA Committees actively participated in the training.
Furthermore, it stated that the team shared detailed insights on the behaviour and characteristics of elephants and demonstrated practical, non-lethal methods to safeguard farmlands and settlements without harming the elephants.
At the same time, the press release stated that the demonstrations included preparing and using grass bundles containing dry chilli and tobacco, chilli-grease fencing, fireballs for deterring elephants from a distance, and other precautionary measures to prevent crop and property damage.
It also stated that the villagers were also informed about the reporting procedure in case of elephant-related damages as the affected areas must be geo-tagged, documented through the respective village council and reported to the nearest Forest Range Office within 72 hours for immediate response and possible compensation assessment.
It stated that the training was part of the project being implemented under Mokokchung Forest Division by the Forest and Biodiversity Management in the Himalaya, Nagaland Project (FBMP), co-financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (KfW) which is a German Development Bank.
