An awareness-cum-workshop on special education, learning disabilities and inclusive education was organised by The Treehouse Pre-School, Mokokchung on January 21 and 22.
Special Education Trainer at Keystone Education Society Lanusongla Lemtur was the trainer for the two-day programme that focused on special and inclusive education and an institution's or school’s approach to inclusive education.
Lanusongla Lemtur holds a masters degree in Special and Inclusive Education from University of Nottingham, Malaysia campus.
Addressing the workshop, Proprietor of The Treehouse, Arenla Lemtur stated that the need for awareness and implementation of inclusive education has become the need of the hour in our educational institutions. “The need to train and equip teachers to face the challenges they encounter each day in their classrooms with different types of learners has to be addressed,” she added.
“As an educational institution, we are taking a step towards implementing inclusive education in our classrooms which may not happen overnight but such implementation will be achieved once teachers/educators and the community as whole are well aware of the existing challenges that are prevalent in our society,” she said, while laying emphasis on significance of the workshop.
Trainer Lanusongla stated that there are many students with learning disabilities which are mostly invisible. However, many parents and teachers fail to understand and recognize their disabilities and often label the children as lazy, dull or even stupid, she added.
“Our education system is designed in such a way that only a few who are better in the three R’s excel. We need to give correct and timely support to children with learning disabilities and make people understand the idea of neurodiversity, and then only we can maximize the potential of the students,” she said.
The workshop was attended by fifteen teachers and staff of The Treehouse Pre-School.
