Kiphire, May 17 (MExN): Nature SBI Foundation Kiphire observed World Hypertension Day at Modern Cambridge School in Amahator Town under Kiphire district on May 16.
Addressing the programme, staff nurse of Nature SBI Foundation Kiphire, Pikhumla, said hypertension or high blood pressure is often referred to as a “silent killer” as many people remain unaware of the condition.
She said uncontrolled hypertension could lead to heart disease, stroke and kidney-related ailments if not treated properly.
Pikhumla encouraged people to regularly monitor their blood pressure and remain aware of their health condition.
She also highlighted the importance of adopting healthy lifestyle practices such as consuming nutritious food, engaging in regular exercise, maintaining healthy body weight, avoiding smoking and alcohol and following medical advice.
The staff nurse further shared dietary recommendations under the DASH diet, or Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, explaining that the diet emphasises fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and lean protein while reducing salt, sugar and saturated fat intake.
Chairman of the School Management Committee, T Kirithong Sangtam, said education was essential for leading a civilised life while good health was necessary to fully enjoy life.
He stressed that health awareness and medical camp programmes were important for the welfare of the people and thanked the Nature SBI Foundation team led by Longtili C Sangtam for organising the programme.
