Dimapur, September 4 (MExN): The Western Sumi Youth Front (WSYF) has expressed serious concern over the “mutilated stature” of National Highway-29, which serves as a key link to the state capital, Kohima, other areas in Nagaland, and the adjoining state of Manipur.
It also conveyed condolences to the lives lost and all the bereaved families affected by the September 3 night disaster on NH-29 near Pherima.
While the safety of NH-29 along its stretch has always been questionable, the WSYF notes that the complacency of the agencies involved has been a major concern. It further alleged that poor workmanship on NH-29 has cost multiple lives over the years, raising severe standards and safety concerns.
Natural disasters are inevitable; yet their consequences could have been prevented, mitigated, or averted had the responsible authorities not adopted a 'go with the flow' attitude, the WSYF added. “Preparedness is a lesson depicted time and again to our authorities/agencies, which have only turned a blind eye at the cost of human lives and property loss,” the WSYF pointed out.
Meanwhile, with several locations on NH-29 affected by landslides and other natural issues, the front noted that the crux of the matter now is finding an alternate route connecting the State Capital from Niuland via Ghotovi and Zhadima. The safety and security along this route are paramount, as it is a less-traveled road and relatively unknown to many, but is considered the best viable option, it said.
The WSYF also lauded all village authorities under Niuland District for their swift intervention and assistance during times of distress, enabling the route as a viable alternative. Accordingly, it assured absolute support and cooperation to law enforcement agencies and the general public in bringing about a positive outcome, which will serve as relief during this difficult time.
In this regard, besides the contacts issued by the administration, the WSYF set up a team for immediate assistance for any traveller on the ground. The team comprised of Mughaka Chophy – 8787733776, Botoho Achumi – 8787617507 and Juvito Chishi – 9366489617 from WYSF; Ghotovi Village Council: 9856768625, 9863055993, 8837380430; and Katoho Holo, Head GB, Hovishe Village: 7005915290.
