A 20-year-old youth was arrested from Manipur’s Moreh town after brown sugar worth over Rs 6.39 crore in the international market was recovered from his possession, police said on Sunday.
Personnel of Tengnoupal district police on duty at its check post along NH-102 (Imphal-Moreh Road) intercepted the huge quantity of the contraband item during a check to a car originating from Moreh town on Saturday, around 4 pm, the police also said.
From the car, the police personnel discovered 73 soap cases containing brown sugar concealed at different parts of the vehicles.
The total weight of the recovered brown sugar is 3.189 kg and the police estimated the value of the seized item to be over Rs 6.39 crore in the international market.
Following the recovery of the illegal drugs, the police arrested the driver later identified as Ghaijang (20) of Moreh after registering a case against him, the police further said.
The police then said that the check on the vehicle was conducted based on specific information regarding smuggling of the illegal drugs along the NH-102.
