Kohima, December 11 (MExN): Zavise Rume from SCERT Nagaland has been re-elected as the president of North East Psychological Counsellors Association (NEPCA) during its annual general session held on December 10 last at NERIE, NCERT, Shillong.
Other elected office bearers included; Dr. P. Pakma- working president, Dr. Soma Bhomic- general secretary and Sona Bhattacharji as treasurer. Eight other members were elected as state representatives of 8 north eastern states including Rokotono Yanthan as representative of Nagaland state. It also selected 10 other professional counsellors working in north east region as consultants and also the principal & programme coordinator of NERIE, NCERT Shillong ex-officio member of the Association.
More than 40 certified counsellors from the NE region registered themselves with the NEPCA as members.
Earlier, in his presidential address, Rume strongly emphasised the need for a sustainable growth of professionalism in psychological counselling being highly specialized area of profession.
He said “Only profession will give us position and status. It is not the subject which is important but it is the people who study the subject are important.”
He encouraged the members to practise counselling with a strong foundation in its philosophy, theory and practice and further suggested NEPCA to develop training modules based on its theory and practice.
The NEPCA president was encouraged to note that members of the Association are now the resource persons in seminars, workshops and training at the regional and national levels.
Rume was encouraged to know that there are demands from NEPCA for a large scale teachers training in professional counselling from north eastern states including in the context of RMSA project for universalization of secondary education.
He also happy to know that various technical and professional institutions across the country are willing to work together with the NEPCA to provide career guidance and job placement services to the students and youth in north east region.
The drafted constitution of the Association and professional code of ethics for counsellors were presented and approved. The emblem block art by artist Eric, SCERT Nagaland was presented and approved with modification.
The members in the meeting strongly resolved to accept challenges of professional training school of counsellors in the entire north eastern region.
