Jalukie, August 29 (MExN): The Zeliangrong Civil Organizations (ZCOs) comprising of Zeliangrong Baudi, Zeliangrong Youth Front and Zeliangrong Student’s Union jointly observed the 90th Martyr Day of Haipou Jadonang on August 29 at Koirengei, Imphal, Manipur.
Leaders of All Zeliangrong Arts and Cultural Organisation (AZACO), villages elder, women’s leaders, leaders of youths and student’s, intellectuals and well wishers attended the observance, a press release from the ZCO’s Media Cell informed.
The leaders who spoke on the occasion expressed their strong dissatisfaction towards the treatment meted out by the Government of India (GoI) to Jadonang who was hanged to death on August 29, 1931 at Imphal jail by the British Administration in the unrelated murder case of four betel leave traders, it said.
The Colonial rule had termed the resistance movement launched by Jadonang as “Naga Raj,” it added.
Stating that the supreme sacrifice made has been neglected thus far, the leaders of the ZCOs, on behalf of the Zeliangrong people, appealed that the GoI to reciprocate and pay deserving respect and honour in a befitting manner to Jadonang, the release said.
The ZCO leaders on the occasion also urged the Government of Manipur (GoM) to do recommendation to GoI, if need be, for declaration of Jadonang as one of the freedom fighters of India, it added.
The leaders, however, also expressed appreciation to the GoM for installation of Jadonang’s statue and construction of park about ten years ago in recognition for his supreme sacrifice for the freedom movement at the site where he was martyred, the release said.
The Zeliangrong people hope that the GoI will definitely reciprocate the sacrifice of Jadonang, who belongs to Zeliangrong community, it added.
