FROM THE VALLEY: VEGETABLE CULTIVATION IN BAGHTY

Baghty valley consists of Soku, Makharong, Upper Baghty and Baghty village, it falls under the Sanis Block of Agro Ecological System-II, which covers a geographical area of 385 sq km. Baghty is located at the foothills of the Wokha District, home of the Lotha Naga tribe.

From this beautiful valley comes the story of a really dedicated farmer, Mrs. Anna Humtsoe. For nearly a decade, she has been cultivating vegetable crops in less than a hectare area of land. In the year 2007, the Department of Horticulture recognized Baghty valley as a vegetable village and a group of 15 members was formed under the chairmanship of Mrs. Anna Humtsoe, to engage in cultivation of vegetables all year round.

At present, her vegetable cultivation encompasses an area of 1.4 ha where the annual production has been about 150 quintals which is sold to neighboring areas like Soku, Wokha, Doyang and Merapani. The net annual income generated from all the crops was estimated at Rs.1,00,000. The driving force behind this success is her sincerity and hard work and willingness to learn new approaches.

With the inception of the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Sanis block team members assisted in her endeavor on various occasions giving her technical assistance on package and practices of vegetables, distributing varieties of vegetable seeds as per their needs. Besides that, members have undertaken study tours and training programs to different places to equip them with further technical knowledge.

She has been privileged to travel far to Gandhi Nagar to receive the Best Farmers Award, 2013 with other ATMA nominees during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Agricultural Business Summit.
