Putting these healthy food tips into practice will start you off on fulfilling your goal of a healthier lifestyle in 2012 and beyond.
1. Eat a healthy breakfast
The phrase “breakast like a king, lunch like a queen and have dinner like a beggar” may be the best health tip ever. Yet in the rough and tumble of daily living we do the opposite, as we are challenged in finding time to prepare healthy meals, to the detriment our health. However, we need to make breakfast a priority on our daily ‘to do list’ as it fortifies us with the energy to get your day off to a great start.
2. Drink more water
One of the best healthy lifestyle habits you can make to improve your wellbeing! This tasteless liquid thirst quencher flushes your system, hydrates your body, helps blood circulation and absorption of nutrients. The recommendation is 8 glasses a day. Difficult for most of us but not impossible. Drink as much as you can tolerate (or if your tolerance is low like mine drink more). Stick with it and it gets better.
3. Eat more fruits.
Eat fresh fruits to get vitamins and antioxidant substances to recharge the body’s immune system. The antioxidants act against harmful free radicals (elements from reactions in the body which destroy healthy cells). Choose citrus (orange, lemon, grapefruit), canteloupe, ripe banana, apple, melon, strawberry, grapes…
4. Eat up your vegetables
Follow Grandma’s advice, eat your vegetables! These foods in their natural state, pack a host of vitamins and minerals that the body needs for optimal function in its multiple processes. They are best eaten raw to preserve the nutrients but, if you must, cook for the shortest possible time or just add them to boiling water and remove. Choose yellow, orange, red and dark green leafy vegetables including beet, tomatoes, broccoli, pumpkin, carrot, cabbage and lettuce.
5. Cut down on your sugar intake
Start weaning yourself from sugar and you will be healthier and saving money. Use the less refined cane (brown) 0r beet sugar in small quantities. This is far better than using graulated or refined white sugar which has no nutritional value and is even considered poisonous over time. Honey is a natural, healthy sweetener you can subsitute. Consider herbal teas.
6. Get more sleep
Get adequate sleep to replenish and heal the body. Get at least 7 hours of sleep daily.
7. Exercise
Do exercises at least 3 times per week. Regular exercise keeps the body and brain in shape. It improves your reasoning ability and physical reaction time.
8. Read more about healthy foods
There is a host of information on health foods and healthy eating available in magazines, e-books and online. Knock yourself into shape with this information.
9. Do your medical checks
Consult your certified health professional to get update on your health status. You will be better able to make decisions about your health.
10.Reward yourself.
Break the rules; have that slice of dessert, have a glass of bubbly… only on your birthday!
