Waste management cum training of trainers held in Wokha
 

Wokha, November 9 (MExN): Wokha Town Council in collaboration with District Administration conducted one-day waste management cum training of trainers at Tiyi Hall, Wokha on November 9.


Founder-Chairperson, LiFE, Dimapur, Niksungla while presenting an overview of waste management said, “US public Health Service has identified 22 human diseases that are linked to improper solid waste management.” She said “human fecal, along with unmanaged decomposed garbage attracts other rodents that lead to spread of diseases such as dengue and malaria, Asthma, cancer heart attack and emphysema linked to burning garbage and urged to spread awareness about the ill effect on our health due to improper waste management.”


Emphasizing on the responsibility of waste management she stated, it is the collective responsibility of every human being to clean the environment and protect the planet from further environmental degradation and urged all to be responsible citizens and maintain sustainable waste practices that deliver long term economic, social and ecological prosperity.


Resources persons from LiFE also highlighted about the roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders, where important topics like educating the community, segregation of waste at source, recommendation for community participation, cleaner and healthier environment, Bio-medical waste, adverse effect to human health and environment and Do’s and Don’ts.


MLA Dr Chumben Murry while speaking during the training programme appealed all participants to be an agent of change to bring about positive change in the society. 


A DIPR report stated that Deputy Commissioner, Wokha, Orenthung Lotha in his address called upon every concerned citizens of the district to give maximum effort and take up preventive measures to keep our surrounding clean as the waste generated in our town is at an alarming state. He urged the participants to spare at least an hour in a week or month and take up the responsibility of cleaning our surrounding, colonies and work place for a healthy environment and appealed all to spread awareness in their respective colonies, areas and schools.


The training programme was chaired by ADC & Administrator, Wokha Town Council Mhathung Tsanglao. The training was attended by representatives from colonies, Women organization, Schools and NGOs.
