Nagaland Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio on Wednesday said the state government is in the process of developing astro-turf football grounds in all districts to ensure modern sporting facilities reach every corner of Nagaland.
Dr Rio was speaking at the opening of the 9th edition of the Captain N. Kengurüse (Mahavir Chakra) Memorial Football Tournament 2025 at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima. He said the tournament is not merely to celebrate football, but to pay homage to Neikezhakuo Kengurüse, one of Nagaland’s most illustrious heroes, whose courage and sacrifice during the Kargil conflict continue to inspire generations.
“This tournament, dedicated to his memory, serves as a beacon, reminding us of the values he stood for – bravery, discipline, teamwork, and unwavering dedication to duty,” Dr Rio said. He added that Captain Kengurüse remains a symbol of the indomitable spirit of Naga youth and embodies the highest ideals of service to the nation.
Highlighting the importance of sports in Nagaland, the Chief Minister said football unites communities, shapes youth character, and instils values that transcend the field. He urged participating teams to play with integrity, honour, and respect, adding: “May you carry forward the legacy of Captain Kengurüse, not just in victory, but also be gracious in accepting defeat.”
Dr Rio cited the success of the 2024 Nagaland Super League, which was recognised as the Best New League in India, and noted that other tournaments such as the Dr T. Ao Trophy and NSF Martyrs’ Trophy have further strengthened the state’s football ecosystem. “Football is creating opportunities and employment across sectors and has become an important driver of Nagaland’s growing creative economy. The second season of NSL will soon commence, expected to be even bigger with more players, clubs, and matches,” he said.
Lt Gen Abhijit S. Pendharkar, AVSM, YSM, General Officer Commanding Spear Corps, said the tournament transcends sport and pays tribute to an extraordinary soldier and national hero. “Captain Kengurüse’s sacrifice reflects Nagaland’s rich martial traditions. His memory continues to inspire thousands of young Nagas to pursue excellence, embody sportsmanship, and serve with dedication,” he said.
Lt Gen Pendharkar added that the Indian Army and Assam Rifles organise the memorial tournament not only to commemorate the past but also to build bridges for the future. “Through this game, we strengthen the bond between the armed forces and the people of Nagaland, fostering unity, brotherhood, and shared purpose. Events like this nurture talent, promote peace, and create opportunities for our youth,” he said, while assuring continued support for such initiatives.
Nagaland Football Association president K. Neibou Sekhose expressed happiness in collaborating with Assam Rifles to provide footballers a platform to showcase their talent. He also thanked Chief Minister Dr. Rio for his invaluable support to sports in Nagaland. Neiselie Kengurüse, father of late Captain K. N. Kengurüse, also spoke at the event.
Other dignitaries present included Ministers G. Kaito Aye, Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, Temjenmenba, S. Keoshu Yimkhiung, W. Chingang Konyak, and MLAs Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu and Benei M. Lamthiu.
