Kohima | July 17 : Archer Chekrovolu Swuro of Nagaland, with the Indian National Women Archery team, returned with the silver medal from the 46th World Archery Championships held in Turin in Italy this month.
Inspired and trained by her older sister, Chekrovolu, from Dzulhami village under Phek district hit her first test at Patiala, in the Punjab Under-14 archery championship 1995, and landed her first success (individual and team) in 1999 by winning silver medal in Bangkok. After that, she was selected for the Indian national archery team in the same year.
Chekrovolu also qualified for the Summer Olympics games during the 42nd World Outdoor Target Archery Championship held at New York in 2003. However, she reportedly declined participation. Chekrovolu Swuro recently visited the state after the silver medal performance in Italy but has already returned to training in Kolkata.
In an exclusive interview with The Morung Express, Chekrovolu currently in Kolkata at the Sports Authority of India stadium said there are sixteen archers in the camp training. She along with three other archers (one each from Manipur and Jharkhand and another from Assam) will compete in various upcoming international events. The first is the 3rd Archery World Cup in the USA, followed by the 2nd Asian Archery Championship in Iran, Olympic Test Event in London and the 4th Archery World cup at Shanghai China this year.
Interestingly, Swuro said her younger brother has also joined the Indian archery team the previous year. Daughter of citizen Veboyi Swuro, the winning archer thanked God for His love and blessing and to her sister, family, friends and well-wishers for their support and encouragement.
Chekrovolu, serving as Assistant Sub-Inspector in the Nagaland Police, expressed gratitude to her department for giving her the opportunity to compete in international archery competitions. The archer also thanked the chief minister of Nagaland for his constant support and encouragement. Swuro hopes for laurels for the department, the state and the people and has sought support and prayers.
