Nagaland Athletic Association approves calendar of activities for athletics

Dimapur, September 3 (MExN): The Nagaland Athletic Association (NAA) has approved “an upcoming calendar of activities for athletics in Nagaland aimed at promoting athletics, popularizing athletics amongst children and youth and to make serious efforts towards creating a sports culture in Nagaland.”

The association during its meeting held at Kohima on September 2, made firm observation that the talents and abilities of Naga and north eastern youth is not lacking in any manner and “if opportunities, vistas and facilities are created, there is no reason why our sportspersons cannot reach the highest levels.”

In a press release issued on Friday, NAA highlighted some of upcoming activities in the first phase, including the promotion of athletics amongst school and college students by conducting cross country and half marathon races at the district level and state level. It resolved to conduct inter-district athletics championships for sub-junior, junior and senior levels; intensive coaching state level camps for selected athletes to represent Nagaland at the regional and national level; workshop and training for Technical Officials in collaboration with the AFI. 

It also decided to conduct Kohima Cross Country as announced by the Chief Minister of Nagaland and “make it a national level event.”

The NAA will be issuing detailed information and procedures for participation in the upcoming events to the athletes through the district associations, Deputy Commissioners, District Sports Officers and other concerned officials, it informed. 

While appreciating the State Government and the Department of Youth Resources & Sports, the Association has appealed for “continuous cooperation and assistance of the State Government and the Nagaland Olympic Association for further promotion of its activities, programmes and calendar of events.”

The meeting was chaired by NAA President Abu Metha.
