ANCSU proposes 'Academic Council' to facilitate excellence in higher education

DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 20 (MExN): The All Nagaland Students Union (ANCSU) has proposed for setting up an Academic Council to facilitate excellence in the growth of state’s higher & technical education.

It suggested that the council should have representatives such as academicians, educationists, professor/associate professors/HoD from colleges within the state and other required members felt essential by the department and the state government.

The students union in a memorandum addressed to the Nagaland Chief Minister and the Minister for Higher & Technical Education and Tribal Affairs said the council should engage in framing education policies and program, academic performances of the colleges/institutes, correspond with the academic council in Nagaland University for necessary action and proposal of requisite faculty in colleges/institutes in strict compliance with the UGC guidelines.

Further consultations may be initiated with the concerned bodies/forum before setting up of the council, the ANCSU stated while expressing hope that the setting up of an Academic Council would contribute towards the academic growth of the state.

Meanwhile, the ANCSU once again sought the intervention of the state government on a number of issues related to students’ welfare which remain unfinished.

While acknowledging the state government for bringing the Kohima Science College Jotsoma land issue thus far with a land survey being brought about, the ANCSU has urged for a permanent settlement to the land issue.

Placing on record that the science college is preparing for assessment in the next two to three years after which it may be deemed as a university, the ANCSU said the land issue must be settled on priority. At the same time, it questioned the state government for not bringing out any land survey report on other district college/institutes as assured by the Chief Minister’s Office.

The ANCSU also acknowledged the state government for setting up a common scholarship portal and notifying the establishment for a nodal cell to implement all kinds of scholarship schemes. It appealed that the nodal cell be functional by early month of the year 2020.

While 63 assistant professor posts have already been advertised by the NPSC dated November 13, 2019, the students union further appealed the state government to advertise the remaining 47 post at the earliest. It demanded that all the sanctioned 110 assistant professor posts should be recruited through the NPSC.
