Government Hr. Secondary School (GHSS), Wokha, on February 3 inaugurated its new school building constructed under Samagra Shiksha, Nagaland. The programme was chaired by Dr. N. Janbemo Humtsoe, PGT, while the building was dedicated by Zurenthung Humtsoe, Assistant Pastor, WTBC. The new school building was formally inaugurated by the Advisor for School Education, Government of Nagaland, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, who attended the programme as the special guest.

Dr. Yhome said that the new building was not merely an addition to infrastructure but a foundation for rebuilding the legacy of the institution. He highlighted the need to protect school land and property, urging public cooperation and civil administration support to prevent encroachment and misuse of school premises. The advisor said education must be treated as a collective responsibility and called for a change in mindset regarding government-run institutions. He informed that efforts are being made to upgrade the school into a composite school, which would help improve enrolment and academic performance in the coming years.

Dr. Yhome also highlighted the government’s initiative to standardise schools across Nagaland in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, ensuring improved infrastructure, quality teaching, and equal opportunities for students. He encouraged the school authorities to document the institution’s long history and maintain a record of alumni who have contributed to society in various capacities.

Deputy Commissioner, Wokha, Vineet Kumar, IAS expressed satisfaction at the completion of the new building within a short period. Recalling the poor condition of the school infrastructure during earlier visits, he said the new building would provide a conducive learning environment for students. While appreciating the improved infrastructure, the DC stressed that academic performance and discipline must go hand in hand with development. He encouraged teachers and school authorities to strive for better academic results and suggested the formation of a strong alumni association to support the school’s growth.

Responding to media queries on his remarks regarding encroachment of GHSS Wokha land, Advisor Yhome said that the land on which the school stands was acquired many years ago and expressed gratitude to the villagers of Wokha and the families who had contributed land for the institution. He stated that the land was contributed by their grandparents many years ago, who had given their best, stable and valuable land out of love for education. He expressed concern that, in the name of land ownership, present generations are now attempting to encroach upon the same land, despite not being the original contributors.

Dr. Yhome pointed out that in this particular case, the land for GHSS Wokha was outrightly purchased, unlike in many villages where land was donated free of cost. He stated that the government has all relevant records and maintained that a school cannot function when private residential buildings exist within the school compound. He said that the matter would be taken up with the government. He added that if such encroachment continues, there would be no option but to engage the public and seek support from the civil administration, and, if required, deploy machinery and police force for eviction.

Referring to a similar situation at GHSS Nagarjan, Dr. Yhome said that several buildings within the school compound belong to retired teachers who have encroached on school land. He noted that despite claims of ownership, school authorities alone cannot resolve such issues without public support. He also cited an example from Tuensang, where 26 buildings were removed to protect school land.
