Morung Express | July 29 : The apex tribal organization of the Ao Naga community, the Ao Senden, has revoked the organization’s resolution in 2009 ‘annulling’ from the Ao community the membership of Changki village, under Mokokchung district. Leaders of the Ao Senden’s federal assembly and Changki Village Council leaders met in Mokokchung today, Friday, July 29, and shared in conciliation, a leader of the Ao Senden informed tonight over phone.
On condition of anonymity the leader said the Senden and the Changki Village Council met with ‘reconciliatory attitude and resolved differences.’ “Yes, it was resolved today,” the source said. “We are very happy and very much thankful to the Ao community, Changki and above all we are thankful to God,” the source said.
A copy of a statement issued by the Ao Senden following the meeting, written in Ao to a number of vernacular media, was received here.
The Ao Senden statement, in Ao, reads (translated and paraphrased in general): ‘The Ao Senden federal assembly has revoked the excommunication of Changki village today, July 29. The Ao community resolves to live in unity and forgive past differences/misunderstandings. Through a press release issued by its president Lendinoktang and general secretary A Nungsang Jamir has informed the public and various organizations that from now on the Ao community shall live together in unity’.
As reported on September 15, 2009, the Ao Senden’s general assembly had annulled the citizenship of the people of Changki village from the Ao community. The resolution taken during the Senden’s assembly had stated that (translated from Ao): ‘Ao Senden honors the wishes of Changki village and decree that, from this day on, the 15th of September 2009, Changki villagers are not Ao.’ The Ao Senden found Changki village ‘acting in contravention to Ao customary practices’ and was disturbed at the opinion of Changki village that they did not migrate from Chungliyimti and Koridang.
In the 2009 resolution, the Ao Senden had also stated that Changki must conform to two conditions if the village wishes to ‘return to the Ao community.’ The two conditions were that ‘Changki village must denounce their propagation against Ao customs and withdraw their statement that they are not aware of the apex Ao Senden’. Secondly, Changki must adhere with Ao customs and conventions.
