Are the government departments doing enough to maintain and upgrade roads in Nagaland? Give Reasons

Yes:

No:
•    No. Our Nagaland government and contractors will do nothing but keep blaming the underground groups and taxation. Our politicians, contractors and officers should drive down to Manipur and see how they have managed to make quality roads even though they are scores of groups involved in taxation. The issue of taxation has become everyone's punching bag. Let’s stop fooling the public.

•    No. The Government does not know what it is doing at all. It is lost in the dark. The Engineers despite their degrees seem to be at loss about what to even do. They have given a free hand to all these companies to come and build the highway. But do our leaders know that these companies only want to make profit? They don't care about the land and environment. They only want profit. This is why the Nagaland government politicians and technocrats and bureaucrats must keep having on the spot verification and making sure that the companies are following the DPR in letter and spirit.

•    No. The roads in Nagaland are in a shambles. It is so pathetic to see how the roads are crumbling. One can argue that there is no drainage, that no scientific knowledge is applied why filling up low lying areas and also cutting the land for building purposes, but even then, the contractors and officers are not doing their due diligence to make sure that the roads are not only made well but also maintained after the roads are done.

•    No. There is no maintenance at all. Just look at the accumulation of sand and soil on the sides of the four-lane road. This is a clear indication that the roads are not swept and not maintained. Slowly the accumulation of sand erodes the roads fills up the drains and clogs the flow of water. A systematic maintenance systems is required.

•    No, It is sad to say that there seems to be no political will to implement projects in a honest manner. Officers are failing to do on the spot verification and politicians do not seem to be concerned at all.

•    Corruption has eroded the administrative system.

•    Dishonest, selfish, lack of will power

•    Government is so much concerned with the fund provision for road construction, how much money should be spent and how much money should not be spent on road. But, on the other hand, the Government do not care for the engineering and technology and workmanship of the road. This is the reason why huge crores of money is spent on roads for repeated road repairs. The primary objective of the contractors of road construction is to get the whole bill at the earliest. The real motive of the road contractors is not for road maintenance but to get money. Roads are constructed with a poor quality so as to get more contract works as soon as the roads get spoiled.

•    Big NO, and here's why: Government departments often spring into action only when major events like the Hornbill Festival approach and even then, it's mostly cosmetic. The roads are patched just enough to impress tourists, not to last beyond a season. Even before the monsoon hits its peak, most roads are already damaged or washed away. This brings up a serious question: why are we repairing the same roads every year? It either means: -Contractors are unprofessional or unqualified, -The government is failing to supervise and enforce standards, -Or worse, they are knowingly fooling the public with substandard work. Nagaland's topography is indeed challenging hilly terrain, high rainfall, and unstable soil but that's no excuse. Engineering solutions exist, but they require vision, planning, and accountability, not shortcuts. The focus seems to be on completing projects "quickly," without thinking long-term. But as they say, Rome wasn't built in a day. If it takes time to build it right, take the time but do it properly. Sadly, accountability is absent. When accidents happen due to poor road conditions, no one steps forward to take responsibility. Unless the public raises their voice, the issues are ignored. In some areas, locals are even forced to repair roads themselves, a heartbreaking sign of failed governance. Worst of all, many ministers don't bring visible development even in their home districts. If they don't care for their own backyard, what can we expect at the state level?

•    Why is this even a question here? Are this esteemed newspaper's writers in doubt on this issue? Look around, roads in Nagaland are the worst in the entire country. It's a shame.
