MALIGAON, SEPTEMBER 26 (MExN): Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) will inaugurate the newly constructed Road Overbridge (ROB) at Panbazar, Guwahati, on September 27. The function will be presided over by Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam, in the presence of state dignitaries, NFR General Manager, and senior officials from the Railways and State Government.
Built at a cost of Rs 47 crore, the 290-metre-long bridge features a wide carriageway with 1.5-metre footpaths on both sides. It incorporates advanced engineering elements, including a 60-metre Bow String Girder and composite girders, providing improved vertical and horizontal clearances for trains, including electric locomotives and over-dimensional consignments. The new ROB is expected to ease traffic congestion along the busy Panbazar–Paltan Bazar corridor.
The old Panbazar ROB, constructed in 1965, had served the city for nearly six decades but had become inadequate due to its narrow width, low clearance, and frequent waterlogging, causing traffic jams and disruptions to electrified train operations. To address these issues, NFR launched the replacement project in March 2024. Despite the complexity of dismantling the old structure and building a modern bridge, the project was completed within 18 months, in August 2025.
The commissioning of the new ROB is expected to enhance road and rail connectivity in Guwahati, support faster train operations, aid the re-modelling of Guwahati Railway Station, and strengthen multimodal transport.
