The elections to 14th Nagaland Assembly will be held on February 27, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on January 18. 

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar informed that the single phase Assembly elections in Nagaland and Meghalaya will be held on February 27, while for Tripura, the date of polling is February 16.

“The model code of conduct will now come into force in these three states,” he added, addressing the conference along with ECs Anup Chandra Pandey and Arun Goel.

The Commission had visited the three states during January 11-15, 2023 and held detailed review meetings for the elections and further met political parties.

We have responded to almost all state-specific issues raised by them and measures have been put in place as per contextual and felt requirements of each state, Kumar said. 

The three states have more than 62.8 lakh electors combined including 31.47 lakh female electors, 97,000 80+ voters and 31,700 PwD voters.

The Elector gender ratio in Nagaland and Meghalaya is over 1000 and in Tripura, it is 989 which is more than the national average of 969. 

 Over 1.76 lakh first-time voters to participate in the elections in 3 states, the CEC added. 


Schedule of election process 
As per the information provided by the ECI at the press conference, the official notification for elections in Nagaland and Meghalaya will be issued on January 31. 

The last date of making nominations in the two states is set on February 7, to be followed by scrutiny on February 10. The last date for withdrawal of candidatures is February 10. 

For Tripura, the last date of nominations is January 30. The scrutiny of nominations and last date withdrawal of candidatures respectively is January 31 and February 2.  

The date of counting of votes for all the three states will be held on March 2.    

According to the ECI, the process of elections in the three states will be completed by March 4.
