The need to promote and preserve existing natural lakes has been the core issue with tourism-prospective states like Nagaland and one such instance is Tsumang Lake in Wokha town. Believed to be one of the lakes of pride the Kyong people inherited in the district, Tsumang Lake has a great reason to occupy a prominent space in the tourism map of Nagaland.

A beautiful lake is a lot more than just beautiful decoration as accentuates the beauty of Mother Nature. Speaking to The Morung Express, an official from the Fishery department said the lake was handed over to the District Block Development Officer in 1960. So far there is no record of the exact length and breadth of the lake but the shape can be viewed around 1.40 hectare approximately.

Currently, the lake is being used as ‘demonstration fishery farm’ by the Fishery department during seminar or workshops. Bringing cheers to the Kyong, the District Planning Board and Development Board (DPDB) in its recent monthly meeting has marked steps to develop and revive Tsumang Lake into a tourist resort or recreational spot. To turn the dream into a reality, a sub-committee has been formed and is tasked with visiting the area for report to be submitted in the next meeting.

The decision taken by the DBDB assumed significance as far as preservation and protection of the lake is concerned. The success of their goal will go a long way in translating the beauty of the lake and its historical features. The Tourism department also has reportedly taken initiative to renovate the lake, sources said. Perhaps it might also be a good gesture if support is extended without reservation for the development of the lake including land extension in its surroundings.
