Phek, August 24 (MExN): The Environmental Sciences Department, under the leadership of its Head of Department, Vilhoutuonuo Theunuo, organized an educational visit for the 1st Semester (BA & BSc) students to Phek District Hospital on August 22 as part of their curriculum on Environmental Waste Management. The visit was aimed at exposing students to practical applications of waste segregation, treatment, and disposal techniques beyond classroom learning.
During the visit, resource person Dr. Panger Longkumer demonstrated how biomedical waste is segregated at the source through the use of color-coded bins. “Yellow is used for human tissues and soiled waste, red for contaminated plastics, white for sharps and glassware, and blue for general waste,” he explained. Students were also shown the processes of autoclaving, shredding, and incineration, which are used for the treatment and safe disposal of liquid waste and hazardous materials.
Hospital officials highlighted the importance of adhering to safety protocols. They stressed the necessity of protective equipment and regular staff training to minimize health hazards. The officials further pointed out the hospital’s strict compliance with the Biomedical Waste Management Rules, 2016, which include detailed record-keeping of waste generation and disposal.
A total of 80 students participated in the visit, accompanied by Dr. Neilhousano Nakhro and Shesalu Lohe from the Botany Department.
The practical exposure provided students with an opportunity to understand how biomedical waste management is implemented in a healthcare setting, aligning their academic learning with real-world practices.
