The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on March 18, has nominated the State Mahila Morcha President, S Phangnon Konyak as the party’s candidate for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Nagaland.
If elected, she would be the State’s second woman Member of Parliament after late Rano M Shaiza who was elected to the 6th Lok Sabha in 1977.
Phangnon featured in the list of candidates for the biennial election to Rajya Sabha from Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Tripura announced by BJP on Friday.
Sources informed that Phangnon is the consensus candidate of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party and BJP, the two major constituents of the opposition-less United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in Nagaland.
Queried on whether she is UDA consensus candidate, the sources informed that it was not so far; though it would appear so if the NPF does not put up a candidate.
The biennial Rajya Sabha election is scheduled to be held for five seats of Punjab, three seats of Kerala, two seats of Assam and one seat each in Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Tripura on March 31.
In Nagaland, the election is scheduled to take place at the Conference Hall, Annex Room of the Assembly Secretariat on March 31.
