Border tension between Nagaland and Assam escalated today after Assam police personnel reportedly attempted to set up an outpost by pitching tents and mounting machine guns in a hillock near Vikuto village under Tzürangkong Range of Mokokchung district bordering Mariani, Assam.
According to a Nagaland Police source in Mokokchung, Assam Police personnel along with Assam Forest Guards and Home Guards personnel arrived at the spot around 4:00 am Tuesday. On noticing the development, Nagaland IRB personnel reached the spot and were later joined by the Border Magistrate Tzürangkong, SDPO Mangkolemba and DBs.
Although there was no report of altercation between the armed police forces of the two sides, the Nagaland IRB jawans reportedly stopped the Assam police personnel from setting up camp for which the senior Nagaland Police officer in Mokokchung conveyed his appreciation. Armed police personnel from both States remained in the spot till the filing of this report.
Meanwhile, hinting that the situation on the border would likely get more complicated, the Tzürangkong Range Naga Youth Front (TRNYF) has demanded that the Assam armed forces retreat from the spot immediately, failing which they would resort to their own course of action. Shiluyungdang, General Secretary of TRNYF said that members of the TRNYF went to the spot to take stock of the situation. They, however, did not confront the Assam police on being advised by the Nagaland government officials present there, the General Secretary stated.
