MEDZIPHEMA, AUGUST 3 (MExN): Can Youth, in collaboration with the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), the Office of the ADC Medziphema, and the Medziphema Town Council, concluded a five-day Community First Responder (CFR) Training with a mock drill demonstration at the Medziphema Local Ground on August 2.

The training, held from July 29 to August 2, was aimed at equipping individuals with essential life-saving skills and strengthening community-level preparedness in responding to emergencies and disasters.

On the final day, a live public demonstration showcased techniques such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), safe lifting methods, and appropriate responses to scenarios including choking, fainting, and injuries. The session was led by Nuyielu Nyekha, Project Manager, Can Youth. Each step was explained to help attendees understand the practical applications of the training.

Zhove Lohe, Secretary and Director of Can Youth, chaired the event and urged residents and bystanders to observe the drill. He also outlined the organisation’s mission and its emphasis on community-driven disaster risk reduction.

Addressing the gathering, Jenpu Rhakho Rongmei, Founder and Chief Functionary of Can Youth, stressed the importance of local preparedness. “Disasters often strike suddenly and without warning,” he said. “Which is why preparedness at the individual and community level is essential. The skills being demonstrated today can help save lives—so observe, learn, and share.”

Special guest P. James Swu, ADC Medziphema, lauded the initiative and encouraged citizens to share what they had learned. “A good leader is someone who shares valuable knowledge. Do not keep what you’ve learned to yourself—spread it, teach it, and empower your community,” he stated.

Certificates of participation and appreciation were presented to trainees and local councillors. The programme concluded with discussions on expanding the initiative to cover more areas under Medziphema and promote broader disaster preparedness.
