Villagers and citizens of Longleng district can breathe a sigh of relief as the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) of Longleng, Dr Imsuyanger Lkr has informed that the possibility of anthrax could be ruled out as there have not been any further deaths or symptoms reported in animals or humans.

On May 7, villagers of Hukphang village under Longleng district reported the death of four mithuns to the veterinary department, following which the department visited the spot and examined the animals.

Following the inspection, the department drew the possibility of a suspected case of anthrax outbreak. Since the disease is zoonotic in nature and possesses public hazard, the department reported it to the district administration on May 11 for initiating necessary precautionary measures.

Based on the report, the Deputy Commissioner Longleng, on May 11 issued an order banning sale, slaughter and import of mithuns, cattle and goats in the district with immediate effect until further orders.

However, on May 12, the CVO told The Morung Express that after taking all remedial measures and observation, the possibility of anthrax could be ruled out. “The incubation period for anthrax is less than a week and so far, none of the department staff, villagers or animals has shown any symptoms.” As such, the cause of the cattle deaths is linked to unknown bovine disease and anthrax can be ruled out, the CVO reassured. It may be hemorrhage septicemia also, he said.

“Veterinary staffs have collected the samples to know the nature of the disease. Necessary preventive measures have been taken and symptomatic treatment is underway,” the CVO said, adding that till May 12, no new deaths have been reported.
“While the nature of the disease will only be ascertained after laboratory test, public health safety awareness, preventive measure plus treatment of sick animals are in war footing,” according to the CVO’s report.
