DCCI urges action on illegal tolls, ILP harassment, poor roads in Dimapur

DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 17 (MExN): The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) has drawn the attention of authorities to multiple issues affecting the business community and the general public in Dimapur, urging immediate intervention to ensure a conducive business environment.

The chamber highlighted illegal toll collections at check gates, despite State Government Order No. Con-1/G/41/2011 dated May 19, 2022. DCCI said tolls collected from four-wheelers, two-wheelers and perishable goods such as vegetables place an added financial burden on traders and consumers, contributing to rising market prices. It called for immediate closure of unauthorised check gates, including those set up by Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC).

The DCCI also demanded reforms in the DMC parking tax structure, recommending a uniform and reduced hourly charge to ease the financial burden on citizens and traders.

Highlighting harassment in the name of Inner Line Permit (ILP) checks, DCCI said traders and businessmen are being summoned to various headquarters for questioning and taxation. It expressed concern over reports of kidnapping of traders related to taxation, while acknowledging police efforts in resolving many cases.

Deplorable road conditions caused by monsoon rains were also raised, with the chamber urging authorities to take swift action to restore Dimapur’s main roads, stressing that taxpayers have the right to demand proper infrastructure.

The chamber further warned against the forceful formation of multiple welfare committees and unions in areas where they already exist, which could disrupt trade and create tension among business members. DCCI clarified that it will not entertain donations or fund drives, including lottery tickets, calendars, buffet tickets, or festive collections.
