Imphal | November 2 : Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, who is on a two-day visit to Manipur said the democratic process of dialogue is the best way to approach any issue. He was speaking at a public programme at Senapati district headquarters in Manipur on Wednesday. The visiting Union home minister then informed the Naga leaders in a separate meeting that “much progress” has been in the Indo-Naga dialogue and that the government of India is sincere in solving the issue.
Chidambaram also informed the Naga leaders that the tripartite talks involving the United Naga Council, the state government of Manipur and New Delhi should resume at the earliest time possible. However, the visiting Union minister failed to convince the Naga leaders to call off the agitation. P Chidambaram was accompanied by Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh in the meeting with Naga leaders today in Senapati.
It may be mentioned that the UNC had announced to call a 72-hour bandh to begin from midnight of November 3 in protest against the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Sadar Hills District Demand Committee (SHDDC) and the state government of Manipur for the creation of Sadar Hills within November. The UNC has been opposing the creation of Sadar Hills district.
“We must learn to live together and then understand each other and accommodate one another”, said Chidambaram. He was addressing a public meeting at Senapati district where he inaugurated a newly constructed district hospital and a Mini Secretariat building this morning. The home Minister said, “There is no such problem which cannot be solved through dialogue”. “There may be difference of opinions but we must understand each other.”
Chief Minister O Ibobi, who was accompanying the Home Minister on the Senapati trip appealed to withdraw the bandh and blockade imposed by United Naga Council (UNC) on National highways. “We are all Indian citizens living together in Manipur. We should help each other”, the Chief Minister said in his address to the public.
Although a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the State Government and the Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee (SHDDC), all the communities will be consulted before taking any decision, Ibobi insisted. He, however, said a series of problems crop up whenever the Government tried to solve one problem.
The Home Minister went to Jessami in Ukhrul district after leaving Senapati and he inaugurated a SDO, SDPO office complex, a Primary Health Centre building and a 132kv power sub-station there. He also attended a public meeting at Jessami village.
