Dimapur, June 30 (MExN): Peace Channel and North East Institute of Social Science and Research (NEISSR) in collaboration with Dimapur District Users Network (DDUN) and Prodigals’ Home organized a dialogue on the theme ‘Share Facts on Drugs, Saves Lives’ to mark International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26.
The speakers were Sukum Aier, Assistant Coordinator (Community Mental Health Programme); Thinusel Victor Rolnu, President, DDUN; Bechie Iralu, General Secretary, DDUN; and A Anato Swu, writer and poet. Vitono Haralu, Trainer and Consultant, Peace Channel facilitated the dialogue.
Sukum Aier speaking on ‘Mental Health and Addiction’ propounded that the word ‘mental’ is often used in negative connotation, however, it means mental ability, a state of mind where one work and connect productively. Substance use disorder is a disease of our brain and behavior; it affects our brain and mental status.
Aier emphasized on the multidimensional approach, where we need to create support groups, needs counseling, job training and placement, avenues they can develop their skills, medication. There is a delay in treatment process with regards to substance abuse and addiction hence early intervention is required. Early intervention program, motivational and art therapy, enhancing support system i.e. family, friends, care takers, positive psychology, cognitive behavioral therapy, holistic growth counseling.
Bechie Iralu highlighted the purpose of setting up of DDUN, which was initiated by a small group of individuals who had under gone and rebounded from substance abuse and addiction. He also assured on the dreams of DDUN to provide help and support required by those individuals who were undergoing the same struggle with addiction and also its mission of creating a society which develops mutual acceptance and respect; understanding of difficulties that is common; a sustainable and holistic approach ; and desire for justice and peace.
‘The Story of Before and After’ was a real life struggle and redounding testimonies shared by Thinusel Victor Rolnu, about his journey from trial to de-addiction. Recollecting all painful memories, he expressed situations where addiction had destroyed many lives and careers, family relationships and social and religious belongingness.
Recalling the journey to recovery, Rolnu reminded that through one’s determination to give up and humble submission to God, one can rebound from addiction. He also recalled the precious efforts of many family members, individuals, churches, community organizations etc who have been supportive amidst the social stigmatization of substance abusers and addicts.
He further urged the family of substance users not to divorce/separates the partners as all this eventually affects the child and may one day become an addict or turn to substance abuse and called for families and friends to encourage and support the couple in conflict and helps overcome this addiction.
Speaking on ‘A Diamond of Dust’ by Anato Swu, is a book based on a testimony of how a promising medical student, aspiring to become a top surgeon, ironically became a drug addict himself using his parents hard-earned money. For years a tug of war between good and evil sought to contest for his life, until good won. Swu advised the youth not to indulge in substance abuse since it all starts with being conscious of the upcoming consequences. He also asserted that drug addiction is devil’s death plan on installment basis and is the greatest weapon in the arsenal of devil that preys on youth and the intellectuals as they are the future of the nation.
