Dimapur to Bihar: 2nd batch of autorickshaw drivers embarks on long journey home

A day after a group comprising of 30 autorickshaw drivers began an arduous journey home from Dimapur to Bihar, another batch of drivers left for their homestate on May 17. 

 


Till 10 am, around 30 persons, some with family, had registered and underwent medical clearance at Dillai Gate, Dimapur before starting their journey. 

 


Autorickshaw drivers said more people would be joining them later. 

 


Speaking to The Morung Express at Dillai Gate, President of Dimapur District Auto Drivers' Union, Tito Yeptho informed that there were around 10, 000 to 11, 000 auto drivers in the state from Bihar.

 


He said the Union has been requesting the drivers to stay back but they insisted on leaving for their homestate since they do not have other options for livelihood in the current situation. 

 


Tito maintained that around 2000-3000 auto drivers would be leaving Dimapur. The estimate could not be independently confirmed.

 


Some of the auto drivers told this newspaper that since they could not earn for their daily needs during this lock down, they opted to go back to their home state where they would engage in agricultural activities for their livelihood.

 


 The auto drivers said more people would be joining them during the later part of the day.

 


Meanwhile, Tito also informed that the first group of auto drivers who left for Bihar yesterday had already reached Guwahati.
