An in-depth study of waste management in Dimapur municipal area has showed that on a daily basis 111124.56kgs/111.12 tonnes of waste is being generated. However, the assessment did not include two colonies/areas owing to non-payment of Residential Sanitary Tax.

The waste assessment was conducted by Dimapur Municipal Council with the assistance of Living For Environment (LiFE) for a period of 24 days from February 12 to 13 March 2019. According to a compilation of the report which was released by Editor, Nagaland Post, Geoffrey Yaden at DMC office on Friday, the estimate showed an increase of waste which was 100 tonnes per day as per the estimate done in June 2018. The report stated that within a year’s time, the waste generation would increase by at least 15 tonnes per day.

The objective of the assessment was to ascertain the types of waste including wet waste, dry waste and mixed waste generated in both household/residential and market/commercial establishments on a daily basis.

As per the report, out of the 78 colonies where waste was collected and estimated, Duncan Basti including Tajen Ao Road generated the highest waste with 5880.3 kgs per day.

Speaking after releasing the report, Geoffrey Yaden who is also the Swachh Bharat Ambassador for Dimapur district lauded LiFE for carrying out the assessment and urged the public to inculcate a sense of responsibility in keeping the city clean. “We depend too much on the government but when we talk about development, it is not only the government but people’s participation which is vital,” he said.

DMC Administrator, Moa Sangtam thanked LiFE for its support and contribution in conducting the assessment.
