ENCSU demands English profs at Wangkhao College

Dimapur, September 11 (MExN): The Eastern Nagaland College Students’ Union (ENCSU) has written to the Commissioner and Secretary of Higher and Technical Education, Government of Nagaland, highlighting what it described as an “egregious dearth of English professors” at Wangkhao Government College, Mon.

In its representation, the union stated that the “egregious dearth” of English professors at the college has been perpetuating a culture of academic stagnation and intellectual stultification. “As the apex College students' union, we cannot afford to turn a blind eye to this glaring anomaly, which is tantamount to treating the Eastern Nagaland region with stepmotherly treatment, thereby exacerbating the existing sense of disillusionment and disenfranchisement,” it said.

Calling Wangkhao College “one of the oldest and most venerable institutions in Nagaland,” the ENCSU said it has been “grappling with a severe and protracted shortage of English Assistant Professors” resulting in “an unacceptable and parlous academic environment, where students are being deprived of quality education, thereby undermining their academic prospects and future employability.”

The failure to address this issue will have far-reaching consequences, it added.

Accordingly, the ENCSU demanded transfer of at least two English Assistant Professors to Wangkhao within this month. It also asked that the department takes concrete and tangible steps to ensure that the college is adequately staffed with competent faculty members and a comprehensive plan is devised and implemented to address the systemic and structural issues underlying the shortage.

“We hope that you will treat this representation with the urgency and gravity it deserves. We will not tolerate this situation any further and expect prompt and efficacious action from your department,” the union stated.
