Neiphiu Rio Badze, located in Botsa Village, is the second-highest mountain in Tuophema Village, standing at an altitude of 1,972 meters. Dedicated to the Chief Minister of Nagaland by the people of Tuophema, the mountain symbolizes leadership, cultural heritage, the natural beauty of Nagaland, and the promotion of eco-tourism.

Situated 40 kilometers from Kohima, the state capital, Neiphiu Rio Badze provides a peaceful retreat for visitors seeking to escape urban noise. The journey to the summit offers an engaging trek through a preserved natural environment.

A stone pathway leads to the mountain’s peak, weaving through dense forest canopies. The trail, while challenging at times, showcases lush greenery, moss-covered rocks, wildflowers, and bamboo groves. Resting places made from stone and bamboo are strategically located along the route, providing scenic spots for trekkers to pause. Burrows of the Himalayan or Malayan porcupine are visible along the trail and remain undisturbed, reflecting the area's commitment to conservation.

Quotations from Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio emphasizing environmental and social values are displayed along the route. One reads, “We must realize that we are part of the earth’s ecosystem and learn to respect and live according to the biological laws of nature. Let us live sustainably with nature by choosing cleaner and greener lifestyles.” Another quote highlights gender equity: “To accelerate gender equity and amplify women’s voice for social impact, we must work for their economic empowerment and self-sufficiency.”

The mountain is a haven for birdlife, with the preserved forest providing a habitat for numerous species. Hunting and vegetation collection have been banned in the area for over a decade, making it an ideal destination for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.

At the summit, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of surrounding villages, valleys, and distant hills. Kecha, a trekker, described the experience as offering “breathtaking views in natural surroundings. Birds chirping freely and occasional sightings of squirrels evoke nostalgia, especially for urban dwellers. Worth many more visits.”

Aseno, another trekker and a mother of two, said the climb was both exhausting and exhilarating. “As I gazed out at the horizon, I felt a profound sense of peace and tranquility, a reminder of the incredible power and beauty of nature,” she added.

Neiphiu Rio Badze is a destination for trekkers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking solace. Its scenic charm and conservation efforts underscore its status as a beacon of Nagaland’s natural wealth.
